John was a slave with a special talent for working with horses。 He is offered his freedom to deliver a horse to Tennessee。 This book gives a real good glimpse of what life was like ex-slaves following the Civil War。 We also see how those maimed in the war are able to cope， especially when they find out they have nothing to come home to。
